How to bathe the cat?

You have just adopted a cat. This is the first time in your life. Should I wash it? If so, how to proceed? Because very few cats are attracted to water, you might as well ask this question to learn what precautions you need to take to prevent your cat’s bathing from becoming a nightmare.

Should we bathe my cat?

Although some veterinarians recommend not to wash the cat’s face to maintain the natural fur of the hair, others recommend using it to promote the shedding of dead hair and thus modify the fur. This is also an essential operation if the animal is rolling in the dirt. So if you have to bath your cat, first make sure you have the necessary supplies, that is, proper shampoo, cat brush, large towel and gloves. Also make sure that the bathroom has adequate heating.

How to wash a cat step by step

First use a specific cat brush to comb the cat’s hair. During this period, run a few centimeters of hot water at 37°C in a very stable basin. Then take your cat, gently place it in the water, and at the same time caress it to rest assured. Then wet his back with a small container. Most importantly, be careful not to wet your eyes or ears, let alone wet your nose and mouth. Then use shampoo to gently wipe its fur, sticking to the attachment points of its paws and tail, and then rinse thoroughly with the same container, always gently but as soon as possible. If necessary, repeat the operation again before wiping dry with a towel, if possible, before the heater. You can also use a hair dryer, but only if you have used it beforehand.

Tips and tricks

  • In order for your cat to bathe under the best conditions, especially so that he does not feel threatened, please keep yourself and him alone in the bathroom.
  • To clean it, you can also use a sink. However, please avoid using the bathtub, as the bathtub is often a bit too low for this type of operation.
  • Put a towel on the bottom of the bathtub, shower tray, or sink to prevent the cat from slipping. You can also use non-slip mats.
  • To clean your cat’s ears, you need a special solution, which can be found in a pharmacy or veterinarian. Otherwise, cleansing milk can solve the problem. To clean his auricle, use a cotton ball soaked in the product. Baby cotton swabs are needed to clean the entrance to the ear canal.
  • To clean his eyes, use cotton balls soaked in saline. Gently clean the eye area starting from the inner corner of the eye.
  • To clean his teeth, apply his gums, a cat toothpaste, without brushing his teeth. Also give him anti-tartar coarse ground food (mixed with his usual food) from time to time.
